Leadership Skills from Dad: Father’s Day Edition

In honor of Father’s Day, I’m re-publishing this article in dedication to my dad, who sadly passed away in 2024. I wouldn’t be the woman I am today if it weren’t for the leadership skills I learned from him. He empowered me with skills that elevated me to new heights, some of which I didn’t realize I had until after his passing.
My dad served in the military for over 26 years and often led with an iron fist. Although strict, he taught me to take responsibility for my actions, ask the right questions, and think strategically when making decisions. As a single mom, I often played the role of mom and dad while raising my own son. I embraced the lessons I learned from my dad and passed them along to my son in a gentler, more “motherly” way.
Here are 10 lessons I learned from my dad:
- Believe in yourself. Others won’t believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself first.
- Take risks. Don’t be afraid to fail along the way to achieving your dreams. In the long run, your mistakes will help you more than an easy success.
- Listen to discover big ideas. Always listen, since you never know where a good idea will come from.
- Focus on finding the solution rather than the problem. Looking for solutions can help you get through tough situations and make solid decisions.
- Always find something to do or someone to help. Don’t sit back idly waiting for work to come to you. There is always something to do or someone to help.
- You don’t need an example. You can accomplish a lot by knowing what you stand for and believe in. Even if you don’t have access to a role model, you can still get up, do the work, treat people with integrity, and create something no one has seen before based on your personal values and beliefs.
- Relationships matter more than revenue. There is no amount of personal success that can compensate for a failure in your personal relationships. Our relationships help us define who we are and why we do what we do.
- Be kind and generous. The act of helping another is one of the most effective ways to improve self-confidence and compassion. Share your own time and talents generously.
- Don’t take yourself too seriously. View the lighter side of life during hard times. Learn to laugh at yourself and your shortcomings; and appreciate the differences between yourself and others.
- Never underestimate the potential of people (including you). The greatest thing you can ever do in your life is to help people find their potential and use it.
Being a father can often make men better leaders. I appreciate my dad for being a positive role model in my son’s life and modeling leadership skills and behaviors that have helped me to continue growing into the great leader he saw in me! Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there and the moms playing both roles! Be sure to thank your dad, or someone in your life who serves that role, for modeling leadership skills and behaviors.
Pictured below on the left is my dad (William/Bill) and me; and on the right are my brother Shawn, our dad, and me.

Project Management Success Team
The Project Management Success Team is dedicated to supporting EWTG by fostering professional growth and sharing best practices in project management. Together, we strive to empower leaders and drive impactful changes across our state agencies.

Chinwe shared her experiences and strategies for aligning projects with organizational goals, ensuring consistency, and promoting cross-departmental collaboration. - Resource optimization: Efficient use of staff, time, and funding across multiple initiatives.
- Risk reduction: Proactive identification and management of challenges at a broader scale.
- Enhanced collaboration: Teams work together more effectively across divisions and functions.
- Consistent results: Standardized processes ensure predictable outcomes and continuous improvement.
Our next Success Team meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 28, at noon. We invite all members to join us for another engaging session focused on advancing enterprise project management within Texas state government. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect, learn, and grow together!

Go Anyway Brunch Bunch Success Team
Join the Go Anyway Brunch Bunch for an inspiring afternoon of networking, meaningful conversation, leadership insights, and intentional connection at the Summertime Sunshine Brunch. As we gather together this summer season, may we be reminded that growth flourishes when we surround ourselves with a community of women who encourage one another to show up fully, confidently, and authentically. When we refuse to make ourselves smaller to fit into spaces not designed for our “shine,” we naturally brighten every room with our presence, voice, wisdom, and courage. The Summertime Sunshine Brunch will encourage each member to move forward boldly, shine unapologetically, embrace new possibilities, and continue to uplift one another, both personally and professionally.
The Brunch Bunch will have Summertime Sunshine Brunch at Citizen All Day Restaurant, Cafe & Deli, 4818 Burnet Rd, Austin, on Saturday, June 6th, at 11:00 a.m.
The Brunch Bunch Success Team offers a great opportunity to network, connect with EWTG members, and try restaurants around Austin. We meet four times a year in an inviting environment that combines community with purpose, and we enjoy good food. Whether you're new to EWTG or have been a member for years, you'll find an open atmosphere that encourages friendly chats and helps nurture friendships. Speak! Public Speaking and Facilitation Success Team
At the May Speak! Success Team meeting, members focused on developing a proposal for the 2026 EWTG Annual Conference. The group explored the Leadership Compass framework as the foundation for an interactive session designed to help participants better understand leadership and communication styles.
Dr. Ceci Gomez opened the meeting with an icebreaker presentation about her professional journey and the launch of her new business, Bright Minds and Hearts, which focuses on mental health and wellness workshops. Her presentation highlighted the power of storytelling and personal connection in public speaking.
The group then collaborated on presentation ideas, learning objectives, and interactive activities for the proposed conference session, Navigating Your Power. Members discussed incorporating a leadership-style assessment, audience-movement activities, networking exercises, and practical strategies for working effectively with different leadership styles. The session is designed to align with the 2026 conference theme, Embrace Your Power! by helping participants recognize their strengths and adapt their leadership approach to connect more effectively with others.
One unexpected takeaway from the meeting was realizing how quickly the group moved from idea to proposal development. At our next Speak! meeting, members will spend time discussing strategies for preparing and organizing conference proposals more intentionally, including brainstorming topics, clarifying learning objectives, and planning the presentation structure before the submission deadlines approach.
The next Speak! meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 9, at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom.
Speak! continues to provide a supportive space for members to practice speaking, exchanging ideas, and growing their confidence as presenters and leaders.

Procurement and Contracting Success Team
The EWTG Procurement & Contracting Success Team is an insider network for women government professionals who are, or aspire to be, leaders in procurement and contract management. This Success Team shares strategies for navigating complex regulations, building executive skills, solving real-world challenges, and advancing careers in procurement and contracting.
At our May meeting, guest speaker Marisol Claudio-Ehalt, Health and Human Services Commission Deputy Associate Commissioner of Complex Procurements, led a candid session on negotiation strategies in public procurement. Members tackled real questions, such as, “What is allowed in a negotiation? How do you prepare a strategy before you walk in the room? What standards are we supposed to follow in public procurement and contracting?” The conversation was practical, honest, and exactly what this group is built for.
Our next meeting is Tuesday, June 16, at 5:30 p.m. and will cover Best Practices in Procurement and Contracting.
If you work in or are adjacent to procurement and contracting and want to connect with women who understand the unique challenges of this field, join us! Email communications@ewtg.org for more information. New members are always welcome!

Sole Mates Walking Success Team
The Sole Mates Success Team met on Saturday, May 23, at Brushy Creek Lake Park Trail in Cedar Park. Although the sky was cloudy, we enjoyed a cool, pleasant walk along a scenic trail lined with beautiful orange wildflowers. Thank you to Ruth, Kimberly, and Jennifer for joining us for the May walk.
The Sole Mates Success Team gives EWTG members a chance to connect while supporting physical well-being. Regular group walks build community, strengthen shared purpose, and create meaningful professional connections. Walking is one of the simplest and most sustainable ways to support long-term health. For women leaders, making time for physical activity is vital for mental clarity, stress relief, and preventing burnout.
For the next Sole Mates walk, we will meet at Mueller Lake Park in Austin on Saturday, June 20th, at 10:00 a.m. For more information and to RSVP, please email the EWTG mailbox at communications@ewtg.org.

We Lead Success Team Joins Leadership Texas Class 2026 in Austin
The We Lead Success Team had a wonderful opportunity to be part of Leadership Texas, Class of 2026, at our May meeting. As the Leadership Women website says, Leadership Texas is “a state-wide experiential leadership program designed for professionals looking to expand their leadership skills and gain insights into key issues facing Texas, including education, healthcare, the environment, and the economy.” The schedule for the Class of 2026 started in Fort Worth in March and will finish in the Tyler/Longview area in September. In May, Leadership Texas came to Austin!
The day was jam-packed, starting out with a networking breakfast where EWTG President Coleen Hall presented information on EWTG. Next, the group heard from Parisa Fatehi-Weeks, Executive Director of Every Texan, and Katie Martin Lightfoot, Director of Strategic Campaigns and Engagement. They discussed the work of Every Texan, which was founded in 1985 by the Benedictine Sisters of Boerne. The organization started as the Benedictine Resource Center and later became the Center for Public Policy Priorities. In 2020, it became Every Texan, a bipartisan organization with the vision of a more equitable Texas. Every Texan advocates for expanded access to healthcare, education, fiscal fairness, and equitable economic opportunity. The final activity was a series of round tables with leaders from various sectors. It was an opportunity for conversation and inspiration!
The morning was a great way for people involved in Leadership Women and EWTG to get to know each other, learn more about both organizations, and share ideas.
The next We Lead Success Team meeting is on August 27–stay tuned to see what we do!

Mentorship Programs
One-on-One Mentoring Program Kicks Off Drop-In Sessions
In response to requests after our pilot year, EWTG’s one-on-one mentoring program is hosting drop-in sessions for mentors and mentees in 2026! Sessions provide time for groups to socialize, seek guidance, and learn about a common mentoring theme.
The April and May drop-in sessions focused on setting and achieving goals.
Groups reviewed different tactics to set goals, including:
- S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-phased)
- S.M.A.R.T.E.R. (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-phased, evaluate-able, revisable)
- R.E.A.L. (relevant, experimental, aspirational, learning-based)
Groups also discussed steps to achieve goals:
- Identify and acquire the resources you need
- Develop and write down your plan
- Create mid-point benchmark goals and celebrate meeting them
- Schedule time to work toward your goals
- Make working toward your goal easy
June and July drop-in sessions will examine how to make the most of a time-limited mentorship program, and beyond the program, how to make time for mentorship within our busy professional and personal lives. We would love to hear your ideas! Please share your thoughts by emailing communications@ewtg.org.

Scholarship Spotlight: Where Will Your Scholarship Take You Next?
Scholarships are one of the most valuable benefits of EWTG membership. Did you know that every EWTG member is eligible to receive one scholarship per calendar year?
We are beginning a new series that highlights past scholarship recipients and shares how their EWTG scholarships impacted them personally and professionally. First up, meet Kynthia and hear about her experience participating in Leadership Texas with the support of an EWTG scholarship!
Name: Kynthia Brooks
Job title and agency: Child Health Strategist, Texas Health and Human Services
Name of program/course: Leadership Texas
How did this professional development opportunity help you grow as a leader?
Leadership Women was an amazing experience. I learned so much about leadership frameworks, applying leadership concepts in my current position, the characteristics of successful leaders, and how to lead from any space. A great leader is not an expert at everything, but knowledgeable about their environment, team, and current events to be impactful. I also made valuable, lifelong connections.
How will you use an EWTG scholarship to advance your personal and professional growth goals? We can’t wait to find out. If you have any questions about the scholarship program or your eligibility, feel free to reach out to Colleen Couch, Scholarship Committee Chair, at communications@ewtg.org.

EWTG is preparing to launch the nominations period for our esteemed Woman of the Year award. Each year, we honor a remarkable woman whose contributions have profoundly impacted our organization, her profession, and her community. This award celebrates someone who truly embodies the values and spirit of EWTG, representing the best of who we are as women and leaders.
We invite all members to start considering and identifying potential nominees for this distinguished recognition. Soon, you will have the opportunity to submit nominations for colleagues who inspire, mentor, and demonstrate outstanding leadership. This is your chance to recognize a woman whose efforts have elevated not only EWTG but also the lives and careers of those around her.
Nominees will be evaluated across four key areas: participation in EWTG activities and business, career accomplishments, community involvement, and educational achievements. Participation highlights sustained engagement and leadership that advance EWTG's mission. Career accomplishments showcase professional growth, innovation, and a commitment to fostering women’s development in government. Community involvement demonstrates dedication to civic responsibility, while educational achievements reflect a passion for lifelong learning and excellence.
